Transitional Kindergarten (TK)

The Saint Brigid Transitional Kindergarten is designed to prepare students to start kindergarten and set the foundation for the rest of their school careers. We seek to spark a child’s love of learning to set them on their academic journey on the best foot possible.  The Transitional Kindergarten program is designed for students who turn 5 between September 2nd and December 1st, after the September 1st eligibility cut-off date for California Kindergarten students.

The TK class schedule and arrangement encourages our students to try new things so they can become more independent in learning, self-help skills, and the confidence to do things on their own. Weekly thematic units additionally incorporate our social studies, science, literature, art, crafts, and STEM activities. Our TK follows the Common Core standards as per California State Requirements.

The Transitional Kindergarten day is from 8:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. We also offer an aftercare program, which is available until 6:00 PM.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten is an exciting time of exploration for children. We offer a full curriculum, including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, Science, Music, Religion, Spanish, and Physical Education.  We focus on developmentally appropriate learning opportunities in groups and individually to build student's social and academic skills.  We take several field trips throughout the year to beloved San Francisco institutions such as the Academy of Sciences, the Aquarium of the Bay, the San Francisco Symphony, and more. Kindergarten sets the foundation for success in the first-grade year and beyond.

Applicants must turn 5 on or before September 1st to qualify for the Kindergarten program at Saint Brigid School.  The school day runs from 8:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. We also offer an aftercare program, which is available until 6:00 PM.

First Grade

First-grade students gain reading fluency, becoming stronger readers and writers.  They learn about story elements, including character, setting, beginning, middle, end, and main idea. The spelling program focuses on patterns, blends, prefixes, and suffixes. Neighborhoods are the focus of the social studies curriculum in first grade. As students explore the jobs, helpers, community celebrations, and holidays in their town, their state, and their country, they gain a larger perspective of their world.  First graders develop an understanding of the math concepts of place value, addition, subtraction, shapes, measurement, and problem-solving students demonstrate a love of all things math.  The curriculum also includes instruction in music, Spanish, religion, and physical education as well as field trips and special events throughout the school year.

The school day runs from 8:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. We also offer an aftercare program, which is available until 6:00 PM.

Second Grade

In second grade, students begin to take more responsibility for their learning by being responsible for their homework and behavior. During this year students focus on cooperative learning: how to be accountable and helpful partners in each other's learning. Friendships play an important role and students learn conflict resolution to support healthy relationships they will carry throughout their lives. The development of reading fluency is continued at this grade level as students gain reading stamina and greater comprehension. Second graders grow as authors by exploring writing genres including descriptive, narrative, and expository writing, while integrating rules of grammar and sentence structure.  Math concepts in second grade include addition and subtraction of three-digit numbers with regrouping, place value, money, measurement (both U.S. standard and metric units), graphing, and data analysis, as well as, introduced to fractions.

In second grade, students who wish to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Eucharist are provided the opportunity. Students read prayer journals, Bible stories, and Good News Magazines. All students learn about the Sacraments and their role in the Catholic faith as an outward sign of God's love.

The school day runs from 8:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. We also offer an aftercare program, which is available until 6:00 PM.
